“A lifetime shooting sports enthusiast, Mr. Campbell has
been working on behalf of The NRA Foundation for over 20 years in the Eastern
North Carolina region. He attended his first Friends of NRA event in 1994 and has not missed a dinner since. Ray
has served as the Chairman of the local Friends
of NRA chapter for over a decade, sits on the North Carolina state NRA
Foundation Grant Committee, and for the last 6 years has served as the
President of the 425 member Buccaneer Gun Club in Leland, N.C.
Ray believes strongly in the Friends of NRA mission of supporting the growth and development of
the shooting sports, especially when it comes to youth. He is passionate about
helping young shooting sports enthusiasts in all disciplines and ensures that
local youth from throughout the southeastern NC region have opportunities to
learn safe, responsible firearms handling.
He is an NRA certified Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer and
has led Buccaneer Gun Club in sponsoring multiple Youth Rifle and Skeet clinics
over the years, supported the Boy Scouts of America in skeet tournament fund
raisers, served as a Range Safety Officer and Match Director in the
International Defensive Pistol Association, helped with skeet tournament
fundraisers for the local Hospice association, and many more activities.
A Life member of NRA with over 50 years of shooting
experience, Ray has also distinguished himself as a competitor in multiple
shooting disciplines including Skeet, 3-Gun, Action Pistol and as an Expert
ranked member in the International Defensive Pistol Association.
Since he stepped up to lead the Wilmington Friends of NRA committee, they have seen
an exponential growth in the size of their events and in the funds they
generate. When he attended his first Friends
of NRA dinner over 2 decades ago, it consisted of around 30 attendees. 10
years ago, that number had grown to over 300, and for the past 5 years, their
group has sold out their venue with over 500 guests, including 20 VIP Corporate
Tables. Under his leadership, they have
consistently performed in the top tier of the entire state of North Carolina.
During the quieter months after their big events, Ray can
often be found at his home club with his sleeves rolled up doing everything
from building new targeting systems, to repairing equipment and mowing ranges.
A tireless leader by example, over his lifetime Mr. Campbell has volunteered
over 10,000 hours on behalf of The NRA Foundation and the shooting sports in
